India is a great land with a historical significance and on seeing the monuments of the country; we find a history associated with them. Sometimes, the history is stunning and one finds it difficult to believe but that does not change the truth of these monuments. The tourist come across the mesmerizing monuments of Khajuraho and receives a unique touch of the sculptural beauty here but sometimes one is not aware of the history behind them.
One seeing the Khajuraho temples, one finds the mix of both religious and sensuous sculptures and this is in fact unique in the world. Listed in the UNESCO world heritage sites, the temples were constructed by the Chandela Rajputs and these were the descendents of Hemavati who had made love with the moon god and the son born without wedlock was named Chander Verma. This son was a strongman and a mighty warrior and it is said that he killed the tiger at the age of 16.
Hemavati was extremely beautiful and one day she was bathing in the pond filled with the milk and lotus. The moon god was so awestruck with her sensuous beauty and body figure that he made love to her and a child was born after a gap of nine months. She was distressed because she became pregnant.
She was sad with the moon god but the moon god said that the son will be very strong and will build many temples in a place called Khajuraho. In the due course of time, this became a vital fact and in the present times, the excavated temples of Khajuraho are a witness to this truth. The literal meaning of Khajuraho is the place of the date palm.
